Septoplasty

A fairly common medical affliction exists that puts to light the nature of cosmetic surgery as more than simply the pursuit of the vain and wealthy. Often cosmetic surgery will be used to correct birth defects or injuries to particular physical features. The most common location for this is the face on any given human being. The nose as a central feature of an individual’s visage is one of the most cited body parts for reshaping. The procedure used is known as rhinoplasty. However, there is another form of rhinoplasty that is used as a medical procedure for correcting a deviated septum. The septum is the partition of cartilage and bone that resides in the center of the nasal cavity to divide it into two separate airways.

When the septum deviates this can cause chronic sinus issues, and impede the flow of air into the lungs. There are also many issues with snoring that can come about from a deviated septum as well. Luckily there is a procedure to fix this in the field of cosmetic surgery. that procedure is known as septoplasty.

During septoplasty the cosmetic surgeon will utilize the open method of that practice. During this procedure the columnella, a small partition of skin between the nostrils, will be cut and the external skin of the nose will be lifted up to allow the surgeon room to work. While operating on the septum the doctor will remove excess cartilage and bone until the septum is directly in the center of the nose. If too much material needed to be excised the surgeon will typically take cartilage from another area of the body such as the ribs or ears, and place it inside as a support. The use of surgical grade plastic might occur instead of this, however. For further information you can visit www.rhinoplasty.org.uk
