United captain Vidic goes through knee injury during lose to Basel

Manchester United took another blow after captain Nemanja Vidic might have to spend some time on the bench after sustaining a knee injury.

The centre-back was involved in an accident with FC Basel’s Marco Streller during the first half of the 2 – 1 defeat to the Swiss side, which saw him stretchered off with extreme knee pain after turning the joint. He later left the ground on crutches.

The extent of his injury hasn’t yet been confirmed, but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson stated: “We don’t know with Vidic, we think it’s certainly a medial ligament [injury].”

The mishap happened during a deflating night for the Reds which not only saw them lose the game but also lose their spot in the Champions League. United’s local rivals Manchester City were also knocked out of the tournament and both teams will instead play in the Europa League.

If Vidic is found to have damaged his knee ligament, the Serbian star might be out for up to four months.
